Russian soldier detained on suspicion of murdering 17-year-old in Crimea

On January 4, Elvina Kravchenko, a 17-year-old resident of the village of Maryino in the Dzhankoy district, disappeared in the annexed Crimea.

The girl studied at the Dzhankoy vocational College. She turned 17 on January 1. On January 4, Elvina informed her family that she had gone to visit her father in a neighboring village (her father does not live with his family), but had actually gone on a date.

As the girl’s family told ASTRA, Elvina met a young man unknown to them on the Internet, and on the same day he asked her out on a date. Since then, the girl has stopped contacting. The search for the student was organized by local volunteers, posting information about the search in all social networks and local media.

A few days later, Elvina was found in a field, the killer tried to burn the body. Later, Russian contractor Dmitry Popov was detained on suspicion of murdering a student, ASTRA found out. This information was confirmed to our journalists by residents of the village of Maryino, where the girl lived, and relatives of the murdered woman. The suspect is currently in the Simferopol pre-trial detention center. The Russian state-owned Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper also writes that the suspect’s name is “Dmitry P.,” without mentioning the fact that the detainee is a soldier of the Russian Armed Forces.

“Identification of the body is planned only tomorrow. The funeral is planned for Tuesday. But nothing else is known yet,” the victim’s family told ASTRA.
